Description

Letters from various government offices (departments) and individuals most of which relate to the despatches sent from the governor in CO 295/321 - CO 295/325. Correspondents and subjects covered are as follows:

Offices (Government Departments):

  • Crown Agents (appointment of J Paget, scholarships, appointment of instructors of the local force);
  • Board of Trade (Literacy and Artistic Works Registration Ordinance, form of trade returns);
  • Law Officers (extension of Colonial Attorney's Relief Act to Trinidad, Commissioner's powers in Tobago);
  • Foreign Office (Venezuelan refugees in Trinidad, Venezuelan Consul, Venezuelan affairs, President of Venezuela Dr Rojas Paul, Venezuelan differential duties, political situation in Venezuela, governor's visit to Venezuela, treatment of Venezuelan gunboats in Trinidad waters, Venezuelan interference with the British sloop Cis, seizure of British boat Queen by a Venezuelan armed boat, new Venezuelan minister in Paris Dr Urbaneja);
  • Home Office (use of tobacco by prisoners awaiting trial);
