Description

Letters from various government offices (departments) and individuals most of which relate to the despatches sent from the governor in CO 295/317 - CO 295/319. Correspondents and subjects covered are as follows:

Offices (Government Departments):

  • Admiralty (claim for conveyance of coins, affairs in Trinidad, movements of North German Lloyd Steamer Adler);
  • Crown Agents (proposed jetty in Port of Spain Harbour [includes map], appointment of Edward Jacobs as Bookbinder and Peter Smith as Engine Driver);
  • Board of Trade (Pitch Lake, loss of the Annapolis, Merchandise Marks Ordinance, Port of Spain Glassworks Ordinance, trade returns, Customs Amendment Ordinance);
  • Law Officers (resumption of land for roads);
  • Treasury (D Hanly's pension);
  • Foreign Office (bill of health issued at Colon, case of the L'Envieuse, lightship at Punta Barima, claims against Venezuela, British government's attitude towards Venezuela, revolutionary movement in Venezuela, Venezuelan refugees, governor's actions concerning Venezuela, appointment of a Venezuelan vice consul, governor's refusal of a Venezuelan decoration, Extradition Treaty with Columbia, capture of General Crespo and several of his lieutenants by the Venezuelan authorities);
  • War Office (chief justice's remarks on the army, withdrawal of the garrison and a company of infantry);
  • Colonial Company Limited (export duty on cocoa, indenture fees on new Indian immigrants);
  • West India & Panama Telegraph Company (deduction from subsidy);
  • Kew Gardens (coffee growing, cleansing of parchment coffee, growing of ground nuts and ginger, appointment of W E Broadway as Assistant Superintendent of the Botanical Gardens);

  • Charles F Lumb, Justice (draft ordinance for the reform of Petty Civil Courts, address from the solicitors practising in the Petty Civil Courts);
  • Theodore C Pile (railway proposal): James J G Pugh (concession for lighting Port of Spain with gas);
  • E Manuel Ramos (his wife's misconduct and the hardship caused by need to go to Antigua to get a divorce, need of a divorce law);
  • Sir William Robinson (Customs duties between Trinidad and Tobago);
  • Tennant Sons & Co (proposed abolition of export duty on cocoa);
  • Raymond Warner (Port of Spain Pier, Gasworks Ordinance).
