Description

Letters from various government offices (departments) and individuals most of which relate to the despatches sent from the governor in CO 295/301 - CO 295/303. Correspondents and subjects covered are as follows:

Offices (Government Departments):

  • House of Commons (Proposed concession of Patos Island to Venezuela);
  • Admiralty (response to riots during Carnival);
  • Crown Agents (examination of San Fernando water supply, court fee stamps, conversion of three percent consols [government securities], issue of new debenture bonds);
  • Board of Trade (Police Court's constitution and findings concerning the loss of the Bengeo);
  • Treasury (conversion of stock in savings banks);
  • Foreign Office (negotiations with Venezuela, Venezuelan differential duties, seizure of Josephine, Henrietta and Springbird by Venezuela, smuggling into Venezuela from Trinidad, proposed concession of Patos Island to Venezuela, depression in the sugar trade, Venezuelan revolutionary General Venancio Pulgar, claims of Joseph Jellert, F R Hart and others against the Venezuelan Government, agreement with Venezuela);
  • Home Office (naturalization of Pedro Luis de Montbrun);
  • War Office (appointment of Captain H Jackson as Governor's Aide-de-Camp);
  • Oxford Vice Chancellor (examination of scholarship holders);
  • Cambridge Vice Chancellor (examination of scholarship holders);
  • Royal College Surgeons (value of certain work done by the Trinidad government analyst);
  • London University (examination of scholarship holders);
  • West India Committee (unsatisfactory nature of law regarding the prevention or punishment of disorderly conduct, protest against loan of public money for the gulf stream service, public expenditure);

  • Kew Gardens (Trinidad Botanical Gardens Report 1881-1882);

  • Sir Arthur Elibank Havelock (expresses thanks for his appointment as governor, Police superannuation fund);
