Description

Despatches from the governor as well as letters from various government offices (departments) and individuals. Despatches are described at item level; letters from offices and individuals are not.

Offices:

  • Crown Agents (proposed water supply and sewerage works, excessive expenditure on new Government House [a plan of Government House has been extracted from this item and is now held under the reference MPG 1/1125], materials for construction of Government House);
  • Foreign Office (complaint of Government of Venezuela against governor for not ordering arrest of parties accused of intending to seize the steamer Pacificador, forwards Law Officers' report recommending approval of the governor's refusal to detain the vessel Indiana, further on the case of the Pacificador, application of the British vice consul at Ciudad Bolivar for a ship of war to be sent to Orinoco, report that such a war ship is no longer required);
  • War Office (employment of and remuneration for colonial engineer to superintendent maintenance of barracks).

Individuals:

  • Reginald Cholmondeley (provisions of Wild Birds Protection Ordinance);
  • Ernest Francis (forwards testimonials [not in item] in support of his application for post of chemistry teacher);
  • Benjamin Gittens (appeals against his suspension from office of dispenser and forwards printed copies of various correspondence and papers [see also CO 295/275/2]);
  • P J Keenan (submits comments on Ordinance No 13 of 1875, 'To facilitate the establishment of Assisted Schools of Primary Education');
  • H C B Pasley (accepts appointment as district medical officer);
  • J Stuckey (declines offer of appointment as supernumerary surgeon at the Colonial Hospital);
  • H Wilcox (declines offer of appointment as supernumerary surgeon at the Colonial Hospital);
  • G Whitnall (accepts appointment as assistant director of public works provided passage is provided for his wife and family).
