Description

Letters from various offices (government departments and other organizations) and individuals on matters related to Trinidad. Correspondents and subjects are as follows:

Offices:

  • Crown Agents (public buildings and tramroad debentures, conveyance of an iron tank, proposed Government House, requisition for public clothing, copy of Mr Mesgher's plan of Government House, requisition for chemicals, method to raise loan for railway, Trinidad Railway Ordinance, need for paddle steamer, galvanic apparatus, loss of the Morning Star and ruin of terracotta cargo, stores for Royal Gaol, Receiver General Hoare's securities, proposal to light Port of Spain with gas, list of tenders for iron bridges, opposition to proposed railway route, Dr Bakewell's salary, amount of contract for new steam tug, supply of two iron bell buoys, proposed extension of San Fernando wharf, proposed railway from Port of Spain to Arima, appointment of three foremen [mason, bricklayer, and carpenter], Receiver General Pyne's sureties, Miss Nightingale's notes on nursing [not included in volume], letter of introduction for Mr Deighton);
  • Treasury (withdrawal of certain coins from circulation);
  • Foreign Office (proceedings of schooner Columbian, claims on Venezuela by Pierre Soria and E Bridgewater, abandonment of proposal for French convict station at the Isle des Saintes, seizure of the Violet for alleged breach of law, seizure of the Providencia of Trinidad by a Venezuelan warships);
  • Home Office (orders to admit Mr Longden to view certain prisons);
  • War Office (transfer of Sea Fort to the Colonial Government);
  • Land Board (observations of the report of the Sub Intendant of Crown Lands for 1871, proposed purchase of the Tranquillite Estate, importation of labour from other West Indian islands for the construction of the railway);
  • Freemen of Trinidad under Grand Lodge of Scotland (address to the Prince of Wales);
  • Royal College of Physicians (memorial of Trinidad Medical Board regarding diplomas, supply of vaccine lymph).
