Description

Letters from various offices (government departments and other organisations) and individuals on matters related to Trinidad. Correspondents and subjects are as follows.

Offices:

  • Acts (Ordinance No 3 of 1861 'for the indenturing of Liberated Africans', Ordinance No 17 of 1861 'to authorize the sub agent of immigration to act for the agent general of immigrants in certain particulars');
  • Admiralty (passages for various colonial officials, repairs made to Confederate privateer Sumpter, obtaining Mora timber for British dockyards);
  • Crown Agents (shipment of Hansard's debates, payment of debentures, shipment of postage stamps, salary of Auditor General Russell, shipment of lighting apparatus, assessment of income tax, shipment of account books, shipment of articles for the receiver general);
  • Foreign Office (seizure of a British boat by a Venezuelan coast guard, heavy passport fees for British subjects wishing to visit Venezuela, Confederate warship Sumpter, appointment of Colonel Francisco Hernais as Venezuelan Consul, George Hogg appointed as United States Consul, Jose G Sotillo appointed as Venezuelan Consul);
  • General Post Office (Post Office accounts, Postal Ordinances, former postmaster's defalcations, Post Office debt); Trinidad Railway Company Limited (proposed railway contract);
  • Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (Cinchona seeds, appointment of an assistant gardener);
  • Wesleyan Mission (aid to Wesleyan chapel);
  • Metropolitan Police Office (abscondment and defalcation by Customs Clerk White);
  • Office of Commissioners in Lunacy (observations on Dr Murray's report on the Lunatic Asylum at Trinidad);
  • India Office (Bishop of Barbados' visit to Trinidad);
  • Board of Trade (supply of meteorological instruments to the government botanist);
  • Treasury (appointment of excise supervisors, guaranteed loan investments, Bridges Expenditure Ordinance, passage claims, expense of printing geological report, appointment of a landing waiter, Police Force, medical attendance, San Fernando Hospital, money for the Roman Catholic Church, appointment of a second puisne judge, proposed aid to the Wesleyan chapel, misappropriation of public money by the postmaster, approval of Estimates and Appropriation Ordinance, proposed grant to church at Diego Martin, report on Ordinances, completion of a building originally intended for Prince Alfred's visit, Mr Johnston's pension claim, Indian relief fund, approval of Supplementary Estimates and Appropriation Ordinance, alteration in method of keeping Treasury books, payment of £3000 on account of Bond No 9 of the loan, auditors queries on the receiver general's accounts for 1857 and 1858, gratuity of £100 for Mr Gauteaume, Debentures for Public Buildings Ordinance, proposed additional salary for Dr Finlay, additional expenditure on the Lunatic Asylum, approval of Income Tax Ordinance, approval of Quays Improvement Ordinance);
