Description

Letters from various offices (government departments and other organisations) and individuals on matters related to Trinidad. Correspondents and subjects are as follows:

Offices:

  • Admiralty (remittance to agent due to Mr Cockerton's passage money, Mr Hobson's contract passage);
  • Colonial Agent (Moore & Co's claims for money owed for Police clothing, shipment of medicine, tenders for San Fernando water supply);
  • Privy Council Office (application for a superintendent for the proposed female model school);
  • Board of Trade (repeal of Mr Anderson's sugar manufacture patent);
  • Foreign Office (alleged mistake in sending of a death certificate, F Scott's appointment as Spanish Consul, property of Jean Descovich, judicial documents for transmission, French ambassador's application for Baptiste Grugeon's death certificate, Mr Spaccapictra's claim to the Roman Catholic Archbishopship of Port of Spain);
  • Treasury (Ordinance for abolishing mastership of Supreme Court, increased allowance to steamer Lord Harris, compensation to Lord Harris for contribution of governor's cottage, loan fund payments, Public Buildings Loan Ordinance, Estimates and Supply Ordinance, Appointment of Wardens Ordinance, Mr Arnavon's pension claim, reduction of stationery allowance to Colonial Secretary, audit quires for accounts of 1852 and 1851, expenses on account of cholera, interest on guaranteed loans, salary of keeper of Royal Gaol, appointment of stipendiary magistrate and official assignee, governor's cottage, supervisor of rum duties, appointment of geological surveyor, case of Mr Wildman, Receiver General's Appointment Ordinance, Captain Allen's security policy as Treasurer, audit quires on certain accounts of Treasurer Allen for 1852 and 1853, deficit of J H O'Brien as Postmaster, returns and surveys of chests, Bishop's visitation, Cholera Extra Expenses Ordinance, Wards Monies Ordinance, governor's temporary residence, loan remittances through Commissariat chest);

  • War Department (claim of officer commanding the 67th Regiment to additional stationery and postage allowance, Mr Warner's application for a military commission for his son, erection of steam sawmills near commissariat buildings, inland postage);
  • General Post Office (compulsory prepayment of postage);
  • Royal Commission of the Patriotic Fund (contribution of £500 from Roman Catholics, patriotic subscription of £471 1s 6d);
  • Museum of Practical Geology (geological survey of the island, gold discoveries, proposed office of mineralogical surveyor, Dr John Perry's report on specimens of gold, comment on Dr Perry's report on iron ore);
  • West India Committee (complaint against the alleged irregular management of local revenue, delay in framing estimates, re-imposition of export duty, revenue deficiency);
