Description

Letters from various offices (government departments and other organisations) and individuals on matters related to Trinidad. Correspondents and subjects are as follows:

Offices:

  • Admiralty (contract passages ordered for Mr and Mrs Warner);
  • Colonial Agent (governor's request for poor law commissioners' reports, barometer sent home for repair, estimated cost of medicine and blankets needed for the hospital and Royal Gaol, judgement in outlawry for debt against E Hodgkinson, report of commissioners for the supply of water to the metropolis, requisition for postage stamps, G T Ashmore's passage to Calcutta, E Hodgkinson's pension);
  • Privy Council Office (Order in Council authorising employment of foreign built steamers owned by foreigners in coasting trade);
  • Foreign Office (transmission of legal documents, French Chargé d'Affaires' complaint against the governor [in French], alleged project named 'Level' to annex Trinidad to Venezuela, property left by Austrian subject Jean Descovich);
  • Home Office (report on gaol rules by Captain William Inspector of Prisons for the Home District);
  • Treasury (auditor's query on treasurer's accounts, recovery of money due by Major Allen, Export Duty on Colonial Produce Ordinance, conformation of Excise Duty on Rum and Spirits Ordinance and Tavern and Public House Licenses Ordinance, appointment of a comptroller of customs and navigation laws [printed for Parliament Aug 1853], commissions and instructions to customs officers, appointment of three additional stipendiary magistrates, addition of temporary female lunatic ward and prisoners yard to the Royal Gaol, Bishop's visitation expenses bill, confirmation of Recovery of Road Rates Ordinance, limits placed on payments made in British silver, confirmation of Customs Management Ordinance, complaint against the commissariat regarding remittances to the Colonial Agent);
