Description

Letters from various offices (government departments and other organisations) and individuals on matters related to Trinidad. Correspondents and subjects are as follows:

Offices:

  • Admiralty (ship for conveying emigrants from Sierra Leone, use of cocoa for the Navy);
  • Agents (payment of member of Council John Losh's fees, Secretary Mr Turnbull's half salary, late Marshal Mr Hodgkinson's salary, two spy glasses and six despatch boxes for the government, orders for a printing press, surcharge against Sir C Smith);
  • Commander in Chief (crowded state of the barracks);
  • Privy Council Office (confirming an ordinance for encouraging immigration, allowing an ordinance for emigration from Africa, copy of ordinance regulating the harbour of Port of Spain);
  • Board of Trade (cultivation of cotton and tobacco, opinion on ordinance regulating the harbour of Port of Spain);
  • Home Office (report on gaol rules, observations on the Police Ordinance);
  • Ordnance (barrack accommodation, proposed use of old barracks as a convalescent station, issue of hospital supplies, repayment to Lieutenant Heyland for the gaol expenses of a soldier);
  • Treasury (exemption of carriages carrying troops' supplies from tolls, surplus revenue, provost marshal's salary, Mr Carter's reappointment as Superintendent of the Manzanilla settlements, payment of stipendiary magistrates, admission of supplies imported in open boats from the Spanish Main, payment of Customs duties, remittance of duties on goods for the Catholic Church, Commissioners of Audit queries on the accounts of late Counsul at Granville A White, sum voted for the lieutenant governor's salary, use of Manzanilla Fund to aid new schools, surcharge against Sir C Smith, escheated property of J Malick);
  • War Office (effect of bad state of the barracks on the health of the troops, administration of Sir G Hill's estate, fees improperly levied on the property of two deceased soldiers);
  • African Civilisation Society (requests copy of order relating to apprenticing Africans liberated by the Slave Trade Abolition Treaties for one year);
  • Excise Office (no objection to Pedlar Ordinance);
  • Land and Immigration Office (disposal of waste lands, mortality among European emigrants);
  • Geological Society (acknowledges enquiry regarding earthquakes).
