Description

Letters from various offices (government departments and other organisations) on matters related to Trinidad. Correspondents and subjects are as follows.

  • Admiralty (conveyance of certain persons of the Mandingo Nation to Sierra Leone, inability to convey Mahommed Sissei of the Mandingo Nation to Sierra Leone on the Parmelia, expense of conveying persons to Sierra Leone);
  • Colonial Agent (Attorney General Rothery's salary, passage of three convicts);
  • Council Office (repeal of Contracts Ordinance, amendment of Assault and Battery Ordinance, abolition of the unexpired term of apprenticeship);
  • Foreign Office (capture of schooner by Venezuelan warship);
  • Home Office (Mrs Gray's petition on behalf of her husband, requests copy of sentence on the convict sent to England);
  • Law Officers (Pio Biafane's trial for murder, claim of Newmarch & Co to La Brea Pitch Lake);
  • Board of Ordnance (appointment of Major Longley as Governor);
  • Treasury (no objection to Spirit Licences Ordinance, money lodged by Mr Grant with Major Ford, pensions of discharged soldiers of the West India Regiment, Mr Turnbull's half-salary not sanctioned, Treasurer Hay's bond, instructions regarding the auditor of accounts and treasurer, Major Ford's charges against Mr Pantin, allowance of the public to work pitch lakes for a fixed sum per ton, grant of £25 to Mahammed Sissei and payment of his passage to Sierra Leone, Newmarch & Co's application for grant of La Brea Pitch Lake, Major Ford's defalcations and receipt by Mr Hyde of slave compensations, Mr Murray's pension, instructions regarding the judicial referee, forfeiture of gunpowder, Hawkins and Joyce's claim to be submitted to the Law Officers, sum given to Major Ford by Mr Protheroe, erection of a hospital, collection for legacy duty, placement of Trinidad under the Windward Government);
  • General Post Office (establishment of branch Post Office at San Fernando, proposal of proprietors of a steam vessel to carry letters between Port of Spain and San Fernando);
  • Royal Geographical Society (provision of a passage for Mahommed Sissei to Sierra Leone);
  • Commissioners of Compensation Office (certificates and lists of claims [not included in volume; sent to the Treasury]);
  • Asphalte and Pitch Lake Companies (Correspondence from various companies and individuals concerning pitch lakes including: Newmarch & Co; Claridge & Grubbe; Cassells Company; London and Paris Company; London, North American and West India Company; British Colonial Company; White & Philpotts; Barry and De Brick; E Murphy; and Sharpe)
