Administrative / biographical background

The origins of the Crown Court lies in the Royal Commission set up by Lord Beeching in 1966 to investigate and propose reforms to the system of Assizes and Quarter Sessions that had remained unchanged for hundreds of years.

The Court Act 1971 adopted many of the reforms proposed by the Beeching Commission and replaced the traditional Assize courts from 1 January 1972.
