Description
Documents submitted to the Committee of Enquiry on Restitution, vol 2.
Copy of the report written by Judge Denis O'Sullivan's Committee of Enquiry on Restitution, appointed by Baron Henderson, Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs on 17 May 1951 'to examine the progress made in the disposal of claims under Law 59 in the British Zone of Germany'. The report concluded that the total number of cases arising out of claims transmitted to the restitution agencies amounted to approximately 63,000 and that approximately 16,000 had been disposed of by the courts, reflecting a slower rate of completion than in the American and the French zones. The report discusses the causes of the delay in the British zone, first in terms of the political difficulties and second in terms of the administrative difficulties encountered by the restitution authorities.
Copy of Law 59 on Restitution in its published form from the 1949 edition of the Official Gazette of the Allied High Commission for Germany. Also includes the March 1951 edition of the Official Gazette.
Notes from the Evidence Committee of Enquiry on Restitution and Itinerary [undated] containing miscellaneous reports by German legal experts on the progress of restitution policy and its enforcement in local courts.
Memoranda issued by the Allied Kommandatura, Berlin [AKB], signed by Evan A Taylor [Chairman Secretary], dated February 1950-August 1951, concerning the amendment of Berlin ordinances on the restitution of profits and other legal matters. Includes the August, October, December 1950 and April and March 1951 editions of the Official Gazette of the AKB.
Copy of a document outlining the general provisions of the AKB for the restitution of identifiable property to victims of Nazi oppression, undated.
Memorandum issued by the AKB, signed by Evan A Taylor, dated 16 February 1949, outlining the proper method for filing restitution claims. Includes an exemplar form as an appendix.
