Description

Offices and Individuals. Letters received from various government offices (departments), other organisations and individuals relating to Jamaica. Correspondents and subjects are as follows:

Offices:

  • Admiralty (would be prepared to consider proposals for the leasing of oil fuel tanks at Jamaica, explains why Jamaica Rum is not usually purchased by His Majesty's Navy, is prepared to lease Admiralty oil fuel tanks to Asiatic Petroleum Company);
  • Crown Agents (concerning the proposed purchase from the United States of an experimental supply of 'Neo-arsenobillion', the application of S D Robertson to General Managership of Jamaica and Mauritius Railways, observations on the possibility of reducing the annual debt charges of Jamaica, assessment from income tax made on the leave salary of L Probyn, suggests W H Cox for the position of Chief Warder Prisons Service, the possibility of floating the next issue of Jamaica bonds in Canada);
  • Foreign Office (the prohibition of the employment of Turks Island labourers as stevedores on board ships entering Dominican ports, the national status of illegitimate children of the wife of D P Cadienhead, two items concerning Captain Conolly's complaint of ill-treatment and imprisonment in Santo Domingo, the competition of United States and British salvage companies, two items concerning the control of alien immigration into the West Indian colonies);
  • Home Office (applications for the position of Matron of the Female Prison of the Government Penitentiary Jamaica, notes on the control of alien immigration);
  • Medical association (requests that Miss A Hewitson, Matron at the General Penitentiary, be permanently invalided);
  • House of Commons (the necessity for direct steamship lines with the United Kingdom for the banana export trade);
  • Board of Trade (Franco-Jamaican trade relations, the leasing of Admiralty oil fuel tanks in Jamaica, an enquiry into oil fuel sales in Jamaica, the leasing of Admiralty oil fuel tanks at Kingston to the Asiatic Petroleum Company);
  • War Office (an enquiry into whether further action is to be taken regarding the purchase of Mr Smith's land, the question of whether the colony should bear the cost of the Reserve of the West India Regiment in Jamaica);
  • Colonial Office (a letter from S Wilson regarding the appointment of the Director of Railways, shipments of spirits from Jamaica and Grand Cayman, the administration of the government, L Probyn packing the Bay Islands Seal in error, two items concerning the proposed steamship line between Jamaica and United Kingdom for bananas, proposed topographical and cadastral surveys for Jamaica, the proposed scheme for the development of Montego Bay);
  • Ordnance Survey Office (estimate of the cost of carrying out a topographical survey);
  • Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (memorandum concerning the outbreak of foot and mouth disease in the parish of Westmorland, memorandum by S Stockman of a new disease of cattle in the parish of Manchester, Jamaica);
  • General Post Office (the application of J F Brennan, Government Meteorologist, to conduct experiments in wireless transmission);
  • Asiatic Petroleum Company (requests the elimination of a clause prohibiting discrimination from their permit to establish a Benzene installation at Kingston, states that it does not support the leasing of oil fuel tanks in Jamaica).

Individuals:

  • Lieutenant Colonel R C Bingham (application for a prospecting licence);
  • A F Buxton (asks whether the Secretary of State would approve of Major Franklin representing him as a trustee for the Lady Mico charity);
  • H Bryan (points out that certain provisions of the Widows and Orphans Pensions Law are inequitable);
  • C Cayzer (argues that a government grant should be made to the victims of foot and mouth disease);
  • J Carmichael (states candidates for the post of General Manager of Railways);
  • E Esdaile (sends a copy of a report by Marconi Limited);
  • J W Evans (submits observations on Mr Stockley's geological report);
  • Miss A Hewitson (states expenses incurred in connection with her medical examination and requests payment, complains that £2615s 4d is a sum impossible to live on following her injury, requests an interview, requests payment of six months pension in advance to enable her to go abroad, asks whether she can draw her pension in Canada and whether a Colonial Office official could fill in a section of the form enclosed);
  • A Hill (forwards a pamphlet regarding forestry in Tobago which may be of use in Jamaica when a forestry officer is appointed);
  • C A Matley (remarks on G M Stockley's final geological report);
  • L Probyn (reports receipt of assessment notice for income tax on emoluments drawn during 1924 for which he does not think he is liable and requests advice);
  • G M Stockley (forwards a copy of the report of the Government Geological Department);
  • C E Sharpe (concerning his transfer to the West African Medical Service);
  • J A G Smith (concerning the steamer service);
  • R S Troup (concerning the appointment of a forest officer for Jamaica);
  • Major L Thomas (submits an application for further employment, states that a temporary appointment would suffice if a permanent one is not available);
  • S H Wilson (concerning the passport bill);
  • Colonel H StJ Winterbotham (forwards letter of S Wilson concerning a survey of the colony);
  • Whitfield King and Company (suggest that when the sale of child welfare stamps is discontinued any stocks remaining should be destroyed and no more printed).
