Description

Despatches from Leslie Probyn, governor of Jamiaca (November to December 1923), together with letters from the Admiralty, Crown Agents, Foreign Office and Home Office received during the year. Despatches are described at item level; other correspondence is not, and correspondents and subjects are as follows:

  • Admiralty (transfer of wireless telegraph to Marconi, extent of Cuban jurisdiction over neighbouring shoals and cays, appointment of Lieutenant J H Owen as harbourmaster in Jamaica, appointment of United Fruit Company to erect an oil fuel installation at Kingston);
  • Crown Agents (postage and revenue stamps for the child welfare scheme, two items concerning the cessation of appointment of Mr R F Nathan as assistant railway construction engineer, prospectus of the Jamaican Government 4.5% loan, parochial board requests a medical officer of health for Clarendon, the manufacture of portions of a turbine in Sweden, methods adopted by Jamaica Railway for the purchase of coal, importation of cement, the telephone service);
  • Foreign Office (application of E A Strauman for a certificate of British naturalisation with observations on his nationality and copy of despatch from the minister at Berne [2 items], the turtle fishing industry in the vicinity of Cuba [2 items], telegram to the Colonial Secretary requesting expenses, application of G Williams for repatriation);
  • Home Office (application of J Nourse to export drugs to Jamaica, arrival and re-exportation of opium to San Domingo)
