The Crown Court was established by Section 4 of the Courts Act 1971 and came into being on 1 January 1972, replacing the Courts of Assize and Quarter Sessions and a number of other criminal courts. Before the inception of the Crown Court in 1971 arrangements were made for records from the Quarter Sessions to be transferred to local record offices, and for those from the Assizes to be transferred to The National Archives.
