Description

Correspondence from the Foreign Office, Home Office, War Office and other 'miscellaneous offices' (Government departments and other organisations), and from individuals on matters relating to Jamaica. Correspondents and subjects are as follows:

Offices:

  • Foreign Office (ownership of Rosalind Bank and Baxo Nuevo which may be claimed by the United States or by Bogota [4 items], reported arrest at Kingston of General Manigat the leader of the Haitian revolutionary cause, ownership of Pedro Cays and Morant Cays allegedly claimed by the United States, detention of the Lottie May by the Honduras Government, suspected intention of the Nathalie to proceed to Jamaica to embark General Manigat and other political exiles, United States tariff on bananas and coconuts and pineapples, Haitian exiles and the purchase of SS Nathalie, abolition of the Italian Consulate at Kingston, reported purchase of a steamer by Haitian exiles, Haitian refugees and the cargo of the Wallachia now loading at Glasgow, contract labourers abandoned at Roncador Cay, alleged shooting of Madame Duquellar daughter of Albertha Levison of Kingston in Haiti, Haitian exiles [4 items], landing of Mosquito Indians at Jamaica, ill-treatment of British subjects in Guatemala and suggestion that labourers should be deterred from seeking work on the Northern Railway at Port Barrios, maintenance of Mosquito Chief and British subjects exiled by the Nicaraguan Government, alleged murder of Madame Duquellar, claim of Mr G T Hall for compensation for ill-tratment by the Nicaraguan authorities at Blewfields, Treasury suggestion that allowance to Mosquito Chief be reduced, claim against Honduras in respect of the Lottie May, Haitian refugees, case of the Lottie May);

  • General Post Office (no objection to Postage Stamp Forgery Law no. 3 of 1894, mails for Turks Islands, observations on telephone laws, postal packets bearing fictitious stamps);
  • Probate Registry (states that recognition of UK probates is sufficiently provided for in Probates Act of 1892);
  • Pharmaceutical Society (suggests certain alterations to Poisons Law 1894);
