Description

Despatches from Henry A Blake, governor of Jamaica (items 9-52), and Major General K F Bengough, acting governor (items 1-8) dated November to December 1894, together with correspondence from the Admiralty, Crown Agents, Board of Trade, Law Officers and Treasury sent during the year. Despatches are described at item level; other correspondence is not, and correspondents and subjects are as follows:

  • Admiralty (forwards letter from Commodore T S Jackson concerning the arrival of Robert Henry Clarence, Chief of the Mosquito Indians, and about fifty refugees from Blewfields);
  • Crown Agents (recommends H Blomfield Smith as Surveyor General and Inspector of Railways, forwards enquiry from H B Smith about passages and allowances, detailed report from Osbert Chadwick concerning Kingston drainage and improvement scheme, further correspondence and reports from Chadwick [5 items], agreement with foreman of Kingston Gas Works Thomas Logan, request from Commissioner of Turks and Caicos for general index of imperial statutes, ammunition for Constabulary, drugs and other items for Medical Department, claim against P A Fraser former Surveyor General);
  • Board of Trade (stranding of the SS Arden, lighthouse at Grand Turk, pilotage service, duty on galvanised metal sheeting at Turks Islands, inspections of lighthouses at Turks Islands by the Inspector of Lighthouses in the Bahamas, pilotage system, colour sight tests for pilots, bankruptcy of Edmund Peel Inspector General of Constabulary [4 items]);
  • Law Officers (opinion on various points concerning dispute between colonial government and the Railway Company);
  • Treasury (copyright duties on musical reprints, considers copyright return submitted to be sufficient, status of service in the Constabulary for superannuation purposes [2 items], copyright duties).
