Description

Correspondence received from 'offices' (Government departments and other organisations) and from individuals on subjects concerning Jamaica. Correspondents and subjects are as follows:

Offices:

  • Admiralty (proposed light on Morant Cays, scarcity of water at Turks Island, disturbances at Panama and the protection of British interests);
  • Crown Agents (advances to the colony, railways and the proposed sale, construction of iron bridges, construction of Jamaica road bridges, railways purchase scheme and provisional agreement, sewerage scheme at Kingston, selection of Miss A E Blake as Matron of the Lunatic Asylum);
  • Council Office (Orders in Council applying Imperial Acts to foreign countries);
  • Board of Trade (accusation by seaman James Lyle of bribery and corruption against colonial magistrate and clerk, Pilotage Ordinance, Merchandise Marks Law, Bankruptcy Law, Trade Marks Registration Law no 17 of 1888);
  • Treasury (remittance of monies arising from the sale of encumbered estates, supply of the Treasury Chest Officers with funds);
  • Foreign Office (customs restrictions at Colon, filibustering movements against Cuba, purchase of island near Colon by the United States of America, extradition treaty with Columbia, charges against Mr Taylor the British Vice Consul at Port Limon, remission of United States sugar duties, reorganisation of United States Consular Service and the effect as regards Turks Island, compensation on account of Jamaicans massacred at Culebra, seizure of arms from the Fram, affairs at Port au Prince at Haiti, prohibition of shipment of arms to Cuba, martial law in Cuba, outrage on Jamaicans at Gorgona, filibustering expeditions against Cuba, ill treatment of British subjects at Guatemala, Haitian refugees at Kingston);
  • Home Office (appointment of Mr T W Birket as warder);
  • War Office (Kingston Artillery Militia and the free issue of ammunition, command of West Indian troops, position of surgeons of the Volunteer Militia, supply of guns to the Militia Artillery at Spanish Town, gift of guns to the Militia Artillery, gift of stores for the Artillery Volunteer Militia at Kingston, sanitary condition of Port Royal, free issue of ammunition to the volunteer militia, Fortress Company, Royal Engineers for the defence of Jamaica, St Lucia and Sierra Leone, Submarine Marine Corp);
  • Medical Council (recognition of medical diplomas granted in New Zealand and Ceylon);
  • Kew Gardens (Cinchona Febrifuge, appointment of Mr W Cradwick as Superintendent of the Botanic Gardens at Castleton, India rubber plants);
  • Lloyds of London (agent for Marine Insurance Boards at Turks Island, W C R Henson as Agent for Underwriters at Turks Island);
  • Incorporated Society of Authors (importation of pirated editions of English works);
  • West Indian Committee (embankment of Plantain Garden River);
  • General Post Office (Counterfeit Postage Stamps Law - British Guiana and Jamaica, Money Order Convention with the United States);
  • Royal Mail Steam Packet Company (disturbances at Panama and the protection of British interests);
  • London University (examinations and medical degrees and the university system for the West Indian colonies).
