Description

Letters from offices (government departments and other organizations) and individuals on matters related to Jamaica. Correspondents and subjects are as follows.

Offices:

  • Admiralty (visits by British ships to Turks Island, question of stationing an armed vessel at Port Royal, receiving ship at Port Royal, reported intention of US to purchase island near Colon for a coaling station);
  • Crown Agents (money order remittances, railway extension: award on claims connected with contract, proposed loan);
  • Board of Trade (use of incorrect form for depositions concerning shipping casualties, law regarding the disposal of wrecks);
  • Treasury (Sir H Norman's cost in Gibbon's action);
  • Foreign Office (Spanish commercial convention, duty on Spanish wines entering Jamaica, massacre of Jamaicans at Culebra, Spanish Consul's claim to exemption from taxes, condition of 'Jamaican Blacks' at Tampico, detention of arms from the Fram, shooting of Jamaicans at Gorgona by Colombian Police, cancellation of Mr Bravo's appointment as the US consular agent, extradition treaty with Colombia, filibustering projects against Cuba, supposed intention of the US to purchase an island near Colon, condition of British West Indian labourers at Panama and Port Limon);
  • Home Office (dismissal of W O'Reilly Fogarty's case, appointment of a warden for the Jamaican general penitentiary, release of prisoners on the occasion of the Jubilee);
  • War Office (Jamaica as headquarters of West Indian command, free issue of guns and stores for Kingston Artillery Volunteer Militia, proposed pier at Port Henderson, cessation of contribution to the lock hospital, repeal of Contagious Disease Laws, colonial contribution to the cost of sanitary works at Port Royal, removal of explosives from the magazine at Fort Augusta, appointment of Lieutenant Egerton as adjutant of the volunteer militia, issue of ammunition for the volunteer militia, magazines);
