Description

Letters from offices (government departments and other organisations) and individuals on matters related to Jamaica. Correspondents and subjects are as follows:

Offices:

  • Admiralty (governor's visit to Morant and Pedro Cays, withdrawal of Staff Commander Edmund Nankwell from the Pilotage Board, Army and Navy Drawback Law, F J Manning's proposal for a dry dock at Kingston, danger of infection to Naval Establishment due to yellow fever cases);
  • Crown Agents (dispute between railway contractors and the government, issue of £150,000 - 4% debentures, the railway extension, defective railway works, strengthening of the Ewarton extension, system of interlocking signals on railway, claims of contractors for railway extension, sinking fund of guaranteed loan of 1869);
  • Law Officers (West Indian Encumbered Estates Court);
  • Treasury (guaranteed loans of 1854 and 1869, income tax on dividends from savings bank investments);

  • War Office (services of Deputy Director of Roads Major D O'Brien, volunteer force, colonial defensive armament, arms and accoutrements for volunteers, retention of Major General Clark in command of troops);
  • Kew Gardens (establishment of botanical stations in lesser West Indian Islands, report on the Botanical Department, appointment of E Griffin as gardener in Kingston, fruit trade with the United States);
  • General Post Office (time for replying to letters under new mail contract, packet service with Jamaica under new contract, time between arrival and departure of mail);
  • Lloyds (need of a light on West Caicos Island);
  • Colonial Office (recommendation of D Morris to be assistant director of botanic gardens);
  • Customs (Customs Consolidation Law 1877 Amendment Law 1885).
