Description

Letters from offices (government departments and other organisations) and individuals on matters relating to Jamaica. Correspondents and subjects are as follows:

Offices:

  • House of Commons (Crown Government, financial report);
  • Admiralty (Florence case, the fire in Kingston, continued stay of HMS Griffin at Port Royal, affairs in Jamaica and Haiti);
  • Board of Trade (trial of seamen charged with misconduct, administration of Merchant Shipping Act in Jamaica);
  • Law Officers (constitution of Legislative Council);
  • Treasury (damages and costs in Florence case, accumulated rents of Morant and Pedro Cays, expenses in connection with arrest of Westgate, pension of Archdeacon Williams, Admiralty claim for victualling three Jamaicans);
  • Foreign Office (deportation of J W Menard, extradition treaty with Columbia, attitude toward revolutionists in Haiti, possible use of steamer La Patrie for war purposes by Haitian 'insurgents', branch savings bank at Panama);
  • Home Office (appointment of warders for Kingston penitentiary);
  • War Office (extension of telegraph from Gordon Town to Newcastle, administration of the government by Major General Gamble, Major General Gamble's period of command of the troops in the West Indies);
  • Custom House (prevention of frauds such as that committed by the cashier at Kingston Custom House);
  • Lord Mayor of London (relief fund in connection with Kingston fire, rebuilding of destroyed portion of Kingston);
  • West India Committee (financial administration, constitution of committee, proposed deputation of Jamaican 'gentlemen' to the Secretary of State);
  • Kew Gardens (prevention of coffee leaf disease, scheme for a botanical station for 'any minor colony', Jamaica Botanical Department);
