Description

Letters from 'Offices' (Government departments and other organisations) relating to Jamaica, 1855. Correspondents and subjects are as follows:

  • Admiralty (claim of Royal Mail Company for passages for Dr Milroy, Dr Laidlaw, and Dr Gavin, passage expenses of former Governor Sir Charles Grey);
  • Council Office (confirms Act 4053, appointment of Major General Sir A Doherty and others to the Privy Council, appointment of members of Legislative Council, order for Acts, supply and import duty Acts, Major General Bell's appointment to the Privy Council, appointment of Dowell O'Reilly as President of Legislative Council, Mines Act, appointment of John Salmon as President of Legislative Council);
  • Board of Trade (suspension of produce export duty, supplies and appropriation Acts, Colonial Fibre Company memorial, Chancery Fees Act, Customs Salaries Act, ships registry, Chancery Deposits and Imperial Bonds Act);
  • Law Officers (appointment of Bishops for Jamaica);
  • Treasury (cholera fund, Guaranteed Loan, Mr Cross's claim for additional leave and retirement allowance, Thomas Hankey's loan payment, financial advances due to cholera, paper currency, passage to distressed British subjects, Executive Committee Bill for £50,000, liquidation of island debt, military exemption from cattle import duties, statement of loan, leave of absence regulations and absent allowances, investment in Exchequer Bills, Imperial Loan, bank note circulation, payments to Royal Mail Steam Packet Company, Mr Buckingham's securities as Sub-Collector of Montego Bay, R Dillon's slave compensation claim);
  • Foreign Office (French judiciary documents for Madame Duguunoy, appointment of a French Consular Agent, tariff of Customs duties, R Boyle's appointment as Mexican Vice-Consul, seamen and slave deserters, Sir Arthur Rumbold's application to succeed the late Consul Omerson, abduction of slave at Savannah La Mar, death of Geog Heinrich Lyssen a Hanoverian subject);
