Correspondence from the bishop of Jamaica, Christopher Lipscomb, to the secretary of state relating to his appointment and work, his visits to Grand Cayman, Honduras and the Bahamas, and to other mainly ecclesiastical matters. Some of the correspondence relating to the religious instruction of slaves was printed for Parliament, and extracts from the printed version are also included in this volume. Papers include:
- Extract from the Kingston Chronicle of 17 February 1825 reporting bishop's arrival and reception in Jamaica
- Various addresses presented to the bishop
- Lists of clergy in the diocese
- Exract from The Public Advertiser of 24 June 1825 reporting a meeting of residents of Kingston 'for religious purposes'
- Printed pamphlet, 'Report of the St Thomas in the East Branch Association of the Incorporated Society for the Conversion and Religious Instruction and Education of the Negro Slaves in the British West-India Islands for the year ...[1826]' with names of subscribers and their donations including 56 described as 'persons of colour' (almost all women)
- Printed copy of Jamaica 'Act to Consolidate and Amend the several Laws relating to the Clergy of this Island and to invest the Bishop of Jamaica with Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction', 1826
- Printed copy of Jamaica 'Act to enable Slaves to Receive Bequests of Money, or other Personal Estate', 1826
- Printed copy of English 'Act to make Provision for the Salaries of certain Bishops, and other Ecclesiastical Dignitaries and Ministers, in the Diocese of Jamaica, and in the Diocese of Barbadoes and the Leeward Islands; and to enable His Majesty to grant Annuities to such Bishops upon the Resignation of their Offices', 6 Geo IV Cap. LXXXVIII (1825)
- Extracts from the Reverend H Beame's report of the state of the parish of St James describing religious instruction provided and comparing the 'disposition' of 'Africans' and 'creoles', and rural and urban people. Touches on polygamy, abortion, Obeah and stresses that 'effectively to promote the improvement of the Slave, the first effort must be with the free'
- 'Statement of the parishes, clergy etc. of Jamaica, October 1825' giving total slave populations; names of clergy; numbers, locations and condition of churches and other places of worship; and details of schools
