Description

Letters from various government offices (departments), most of which relate to the despatches sent from the governor in 1837. Correspondents and subjects covered are as follows:

  • House of Commons (list of magistrates connected with workings of apprenticeship system; returns of Church estates and schools; Dr Palmer's case; papers regarding alleged 'mal-treatment' of prisoners in House of Correction, St John's Parish; Dr Palmer's dismissal);
  • Admiralty (Mr Willis' mission to Jamaica; conveyance of troops; Sir L Smith's expenses; conveyance of convicts);
  • Agent (packet arrangements; requests list of Acts last session; repayment of coinage duty; letter of introduction Mr Latrobe; Franchise Act; Post Office establishment; Election Law; Import Duty Act; return of sums for education; irregularity of mail; issuing of official command; Bank Act; papers requested; resolution of Committee of Correspondence on working of apprenticeship; establishment of schools; suggestions regarding apprentices, vagrancy, price of land, etc);
  • Commander in Chief (tonnage for relief of detachments; additional barrack accommodation);
  • Council Office (disallows Act no 3236, Bank; disallows Act no 3230, Elections; Alexander Bravo and Curtis Philip Berry recommended for Council seats);
  • Board of Trade (duty on wine; Jamaica Bank Act; duty on Cape wine; duty on British imports);
  • Foreign Office (letter from Mr Buckland regarding debt from Stipendiary Magistrate Oliver; appointment of a Mexican consular agent, Jamaica);
  • Home Office (inspector of Prisons);
  • Law Officers (legality of Reverend Taylor's conviction; indictment of Reverend Taylor; opinion on Maroon claim to compensation for loss of services of unregistered slaves);
  • Board of Ordnance (barrack improvements; barrack estimates; no objection to local Acts applying to barrack at Black River & Savanna La Mar);
