Description

Despatches; Apprentices. Volume 7 Apprentices, part 2, March to May, Marquis of Sligo. This volume covers a period after the termination, on 1 August 1838, of the transitional scheme of compulsory labour known as 'apprenticeship' which was introduced by the 1834 Emancipation Act. Despite its title, therefore, its contents are concerned with the regulation of the newly freed working population.

Papers include:

  • Conduct of apprentices;
  • Punishment inflicted in St Andrew's workhouse;
  • Replies to queries regarding prison discipline;
  • Reports from special magistrates on state of their districts;
  • Reports on provision grounds belonging to apprentices;
  • Valuation reports, showing 'exorbitant sums' fixed by the local magistrates on apprentices;
  • Reports and enclosures on the state of the island (including Police returns, valuation reports, etc);
  • Statements relating to the trial and conviction for cruelty by an overseer called Langhlin, Morant Bay District;
  • Various enclosures on state of the island (including extracts from special magistrates' reports, provision grounds, Thomas Davis's order to discontinue flogging on treadmill);
  • 'Comparative list of Slaves and Apprentices in the Houses of Correction in Jamaica antecedent and subsequent to the 1st August 1834';
  • Further on 'state of the island' (including: Report on Proceedings of the Assistant Board on Contested Cases, Special Magistrates' Reports, case of murder of Jose Lindo apprentice of Mount Sion);
  • Proposed tax on 'apprentice stock';
  • Punishment of apprentices in Houses of Correction (including Return of Inquests taken at the House of Correction for St Thomas in the East between 1 January 1835 - 7 February 1836);
  • Classification Laws.
