Description

Despatches; Apprentices. Volume 6 Apprentices, part 1, January and February, Marquis of Sligo. This volume covers a period after the termination, on 1 August 1838, of the transitional scheme of compulsory labour known as 'apprenticeship' which was introduced by the 1834 Emancipation Act. Despite its title, therefore, its contents are concerned with the regulation of the newly freed working population. Papers include:

  • Reports from special magistrates on state of their districts in response to order made by governor. These include: the 'disposition, industry and behaviour of negro population'; treatment they receive from their masters, managers and Overseers; whether complaints have increased or decreased; on the prospects of the ensuing crop and on the general state of field cultivation; on the manner in which the Christmas holidays have passed over; on the measures taken for the general instruction of all classes, by the establishment of schools for education or religious improvement, either upon the estates or in any other manner.
  • Report from Inspector General of Police up to 31 December 1835 containing extracts from county inspectors and sub-inspectors reports of their districts to that date.
  • Valuation return of Apprentices in Jamaica from 1 September to 31 December 1835.
  • Return of the number and nature of punishments inflicted on apprenticed labourers in Jamaica by special or stipendiary magistrates specifying offences for which they were inflicted and separating males from females, between 1 August 1834 and 1 August 1835.
  • Printed instructions issued to special justices.
  • Papers relating to case of Montpellier Estate, property of Lord Seaford, and the poor relations between Apprentices and white persons.
  • Return of all fines imposed on overseers or others upon complaints by Apprentices, for injury sustained by them, for January 1836.
  • Apprentice valuations.
  • Papers relating to several Acts in aid of the original Abolition Law.
  • Return of the number of properties and their descriptions in each special magistrate's district, 1 February 1836.
