Description

Letters from 'offices' (Government departments and other organisations) and individuals on matters relating to Jamaica. Correspondents and subjects covered are as follows:

  • House of Commons (order for a return of persons tried and condemned at Jamaica for piracy between 1 January 1821 and 31 March 1823);
  • Admiralty (conveyance of troops; Reverend Bickell's appeal for redress; payment to Captain Harris);
  • Agent (letter to Committee of Correspondence from M Horton; mail packet; changes to Slave Law and privileges of slaves; Assembly proceedings; state of the island; praying for issue of further proclamation and increase in troops; detention of mail; Act reducing fees of health officer; military assistance; publication of letter to Committee of Correspondence; Order in Council regarding Trinidad should be printed separately; printed Order in Council and Proclamation; Customs House at Old Harbour and detention of mail; communication from Mr Burge; interview; recommendation of Mr Stuart to Council; intelligence; reports reduction in 'disturbances' amongst 'black' population; communications with Mr Horton regarding unrest amongst slaves; newspaper report on trials of 'rebellious' slaves in Hanover; merchants request reinforcements; troops' rations and accommodation; Colonial Acts; publication of Assembly letters);
