Description

Letters from 'offices' (Government departments and other organisations) and individuals on matters relating to Jamaica. Correspondents and subjects covered are as follows:

Offices:

  • Admiralty (piracy; detention by Haiti of 'Pilot Slaves' belonging to Mr J McKowen of Port Royal; request from R Taylor for licence to arm the Louisa);
  • Agent ('Bill for a more particular return of slaves'; Acts: 'in permittance of the Abolition of the Slave Trade', 'for providing curates for the several parishes of the island and for promoting religious instruction among slaves', 'for the subsistence, clothing and better regulation and government of slaves'; reduction of Black Corps; black troops; Dr Scarlett; leave of absence for J Jones; leave of absence for G Pinnock; activities of privateers carrying Carthagenian flag; 'the Curate Act'; Registry Bill; state of the island; 'an Act to further augment the salary of the Duke of Manchester, etc');
  • Commander in Chief (reduction of troops; allowances for troops; sheets for troops; Philip Verlens's passage; command of troops at Honduras; barrack master required; poor pay of military labourers);
  • Council Office (order appointing W Binge as a Council member; shipment by Messrs Baring Brothers and Company; quicksilver shipments to America; Acts, 'for paying a duty on certain goods…imported from USA', 'to amend an Act for duty on certain imports from USA', 'to remove the assizes for the county of Cornwall… and to make Montego Bay the county town of Cornwall'; petition from merchants trading between Jamaica and European colonies);
