Description

Letters from 'offices' (government departments and other organisations) and individuals relating to despatches sent from the governor in 1811. Correspondents and subjects covered are as follows:

  • Office of Committee for Privy Council for Trade & Foreign Plantations (confirmation of Act no 1440 'an Act to empower the honourable John Jaques, Esq, etc'; Bill to enable the suitors in the Supreme and Assize Courts to appeal directly to His Majesty in Council);
  • Whitehall (delay in post);
  • Colonial Office (commission of Mr Brenton);
  • Treasury (appeal papers in case of seizure and condemnation of Swift and cargo; pay due to John Sulterton; case of Spanish ship Nuestra Señora de la Fortuna; enquiry from Mr Johnson regarding an estate in Jamaica; lodging money, Balcarres; distribution on account of seizures);
  • Mr Lyon (petition from inhabitants of St Mary and St George regarding use of Annotto Bay; James Jones, Council seat);
  • Mr Shaw (acquiring possession of St Domingo; memorial on his custody and trial);
  • State Paper Office (enquiry from Mr Johnson regarding an estate in Jamaica);
  • G Hibbert (delay of mail packet requested by General Post Office);
  • Court at Whitehall (recommends S Whitehouse Barnett, W Murray, James Lee for Council seats; Act transmitted 'to prevent prevailing and teaching by persons not duly qualified and to restrain meetings of a dangerous nature on pretence of attending such preaching and teaching');
  • Court at York House (Acts transmitted 'for vesting certain slaves late the property of Mary Elizabeth the wife of Nathaniel Marson Senior in trustees to be sold and for investing the money thence arising in public securities', 'an Act to enable the guardian of the infant devisees under the wills of W Clarke and C J Clarke deceased to sell detached lands applying the money arising from such sale in manner therein mentioned', 'an Act to vest the lands, slaves and real property of J Gordon and G W Donaldson deceased in their respective legal representations for the purpose of selling or leasing the same and of manumising certain slaves, etc,', 'an Act to establish a valid title to John Kelly, Castle Mine Plantation, St Mary's', 'an Act to enable J Napier and wife, A Kaylet, E Mitchell, to perfect and confirm the title of D Watt, etc', and 'an Act for vesting the real estate and slaves of J Reid deceased in W Shand to be sold').
