Description

Two reports by John Silvester, Recorder of London, on 3 individual petitions (Captain George Herbert, 1st Regiment Life Guards; W Manse and Owen Jones, prosecutor) and 1 collective petition (19 people, comprising the jurors, the appointer of weighers at HM Customs and the minister and overseers of the parish of St Katherine's Precinct, London Docks) on behalf of James Watkins alias James Watson, weigher in the customs house, convicted at the Old Bailey on 21 May 1809 for the theft of 35 beaver skins, value £40, property of Owen Jones, skinner, on 25 March 1809. The petitions relate to the later 1811 report. Evidences supplied by Owen Jones, William Scrivener, hatter; John Griffiths, officer; Hannah Spiller, servant to the prosecutor. There are letters from Archibald Hamilton and Lady Emma Hamilton (dated 1812); and a note of the names of the 2 persons giving sureties for good behaviour and an employment reference from Lieutenant General Lord Banbury 3rd Regiment Life Guards (dated 1808). Grounds for clemency: the prisoner was of previous good behaviour, the jury had petitioned in his favour, other respectable people favour his petition, the prisoner has served in the 3rd Regiment of Guards under HRH the Duke of York, has a wife and 6 children dependant on him, he is innocent, being the dupe of a receiver and has sureties for good behaviour. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: no mercy (in both reports 1809 and 1811). Folios 63-81.
