HO 47/42/6
1809 June 17
Report of Earl Poulett, Recorder of Bridgwater, on 1 collective petition (48 people, of Bridgwater, Somerset, including the Bridgwater Gaol Keeper) on behalf of James Dyke, carpenter, convicted at the Bridgwater Quarter Sessions, Somerset, in January 1809, for the theft of a small quantity of flour, value 10d, from a flourmill. There is a covering letter to the petition from Stephen Dyke, the prisoner's father. Grounds for clemency: previous good character, first offence; he requested remission of the whipping only as this would distress his aged parents and he had already almost served the term of his sentence. Initial sentence: 6 months imprisonment and to be publicly whipped through the town on market day during the last week of his sentence. Recommendation: mercy. Folios 48-53.
