Report of W F Boteler, Recorder of Sandwich, [Kent], on 1 individual petition (Mary Bracknell, the prisoner's mother) and 1 collective petition (6 people, including the Mayor of Sandwich and the recorder) on behalf of John Bracknell, mariner on the Lisbon packet boat, convicted at the Sandwich General Sessions [Sandwich Quarter Sessions] in 1809, for the theft, on 10 December 1808, of 2 pieces of nankeen cloth, value 15/-, part of the cargo of the ship, property of John Forbes, master mariner of the Lisbon packet boat. There are letters from Mary Bracknell. Grounds for clemency: first offence, he was not regarded as a 'hardened offender', his father died early and the prisoner supported his widowed and 'distressed' mother, the original sentence had been harshly imposed to deter seamen from stealing from their vessels and his mother wishes him to serve in HM Navy. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: speaks in favour of mercy. Annotated: to be discharged. Folios 40-47.
