Description

1 individual petition (prisoner) and 1 collective petition (36 people, from Winterbourne, Gloucestershire, including the prosecutor, churchwardens and overseers) on behalf of Samuel Dent, convicted at the Herefordshire Assizes in August 1808, for the theft of 2 steers from the Reverend Dr John Napleton There is a covering letter to the petition from Charles Bathurst. Grounds for clemency: is penitent and contrite, the prisoner has a wife and 5 small children, wishes to transport himself to the 'West Indeas' [West Indies], wishes to take his wife and family with him, if this is not possible then he wishes to sentence to revert to that of death as he would rather die than go to New South Wales. Initial sentence: death, commuted to transportation for life. Folios 313-318.
