Report of Robert Dallas on 4 collective petitions (20 people, trades given (for Proudlove); 28 people, 'being persons resident near to the Farm house occupied by the father and mother' of Glover (for Glover); 15 people of Sandbach, Chester, mostly women (for Proudlove) and 104 people of Sandbach, Chester, many signatures in the same hand (for Glover)) on behalf of William Proudlove and George Glover, labourers, tried (with William Newton, Joseph Lowe, James Harrison and Samuel Johnston, all acquitted) and convicted at the Chester Assizes, for shooting at William Stockton, Excise Officer on 17 October 1808. Evidences supplied by William Stockton, John Tucker, Robert Thomson and William Winne, all excise officers; John Smith, watchman at Lawton Salt Works; Thomas Smith, William Smith, John Davies, Thomas Johnson, who gave king's evidence, prisoner in Chester Castle; Samuel Arrowsmith and William White. There is a long and detailed account of the trial. There are letters from Lady Crewe and a character reference from previous employers of Proudlove. Grounds for clemency: Proudlove: previous good character, was not present at the shooting and is innocent. Glover: was not present at the shooting, the shooting was done by Robert Beechlaw. Initial sentence: death. Recommendation: none given. Folios 285-301.
