Report of Thomas Thompson on 1 collective petition (14 yeomen, churchwardens, a magistrate, the prosecutor and others of Monkton Deverill) on behalf of Jacob Norris, day labourer at Monkton Deverill near Warminster, convicted at the Wiltshire Assizes at New Sarum, on 20 July 1807, for the theft of waistcoat pieces, value 5/-, from Frederick McTier. Letters from Thomas Thompson, Captain of the Captivity hulk at Portsmouth; and George Thynne. There is also a reference to a John Clark (another prisoner) Grounds for clemency: previous good character, first offence, has behaved well during his imprisonment (this is later disputed; his wife, living at Portsea, had brought him stolen goods to the hulk), has a wife, child and mother dependent on him and his conduct has been influenced by 'a vicious wife'. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: none made. Folios 64-73.
