Report of John Silvester, Recorder of London on 1 collective petition (8 residents of Christ Church parish, Spitalfields, Middlesex/London) on behalf of James Tolley, bricklayer, convicted at the Old Bailey in May 1808, for the theft of 11 'deals' [planks], value £3, from James Jeffreys, publican, on 18 April 1808. Evidences supplied by James Jeffreys, publican; Peter King, timber merchant; Samuel Shelley, carpenter; John Murphy, William Jeffreys, Edmund Knight, sawyer and timber merchant; John Armstrong, officer and John Curley. There is an affidavit on behalf of the prisoner. Grounds for clemency: previous good character, is innocent and his character was misrepresented in court. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: no mercy. Folios 51-58.
