In 1968 the Newcastle Central Office came under the Department of Health and Social Security for whom the office administered national insurance records and benefits, and family allowances. The early years of the Department of Health and Social Security saw substantial computerisation of the payment of benefits and the administration of national insurance, and much of this work was centred at the Newcastle Office.
