Nature of request
[Petition in five parts].1) [The entire left-hand side of this request is missing]. The petitioner requests letters concerning the labour and expenses around [...].2) The petitioners complain of the construction of a mill below the castle by the justiciar in prejudice of the city and the payment of their farm. As the king would not wish to injure them, they request that that the king give them grace and remedy concerning the mill, or allowance in their farm.3) Henry III ordered Fitz Gerald, his justiciar to provide good access to water for the city of Dublin, and he went about executing this bringing water from the course of the Dodder where he considered it sufficient. But now the abbot of St Thomas, Dublin daily vexes the citizens before the justiciar, and they request that the justiciar be written to protect and defend the citizens and not permit them to be vexed.4) The petitioners state that wine was taken from a Gascon at Dublin for the king's use for twenty eight marks, and the citizens in the name of the king were ordered by the justiciar to pay the Gascon, and they would have allowance in their farm. But because the payment was not made quickly enough for the Gascon, he made to take in Gascony from the citizens of Dublin beyond the twenty-eight marks, to the sum of twenty pounds wherefore they petition remedy if it pleases.5) The petitioners request remedy concerning a statute made there.
