Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/346/E1388
Date
[? c. 1316]
Description
Petitioners
Widows both of the city of London and others of the land.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The widows state that when demanding dower of tenements whereof their husbands died seised and were held out of their dower, some for 2 years and some for three, and damages were adjudged to them before the purveyance of Merton [presumably the statute of Merton of 1235 that did deal with widows], this by the reason that no mention is made in the purveyance of widows of the city of London, and are still without recovery of their damages, and by this reason kept for a long time out of their inheritance to their great damage. They request that a remedy is ordained, and that it seems to those of both condition that they ought to be at the common law.
Nature of endorsement
Coram magno consilio.
Places mentioned
London.
Note
The petition is dated to? c. 1316 in accordance with the guard note which seems to be based on the similarity of response between this petition and that of SC 8/346/E1387. The responses in both are in a very similar hand, though it does not seem to be identical. It seems likely that they are of a similar date.
