Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/346/E1380
Date
[? 1297-1309]
Description
Petitioners
Roger le Rus, canon of the church of St Peter, Exeter; William de Bysenham, canon of the church of St Peter, Exeter.
Name(s)
Rus; de Bysenham, Roger; William
Addressees
King.
Occupation
canon of the church of St Peter, Exeter
Nature of request
Rus and Bysenham state that they purchased rent in Exeter for their heirs, but the late sub-escheator believing them to be for the dean and chapter, and purchased against the statute of the king, took them into the king's hand, and the current sub-escheator still detains the rent. Because a writ of novel disseisin is not pleaded in Exeter, they request a remedy be made according to the law.
Nature of endorsement
Those sub-escheators should come before the king at the Exchequer to make their answers.
Places mentioned
Exeter, [Devon].
People mentioned
Nicholas de Filelegh, late sub-escheator in Devon
Dean and chapter of Exeter
Henry de Ralegh, sub-escheator of Exeter.
Note
The petition is dated to? 1297-1309 on the basis of the guard notes. Unfortunately these are based on references to the published Bishops' registers for Exeter, and the failure of the editors of those registers to explain the structure of their work has meant that it has been impossible to substantiate the earlier date! The latter date is defined by the recorded death of the second petitioner (The Registers of Walter Bronescombe (A.D. 1257-1280), and Peter Quivil (A.D. 1280-1291), ed.by F.C. Hingeston-Randolph, (London, 1889), pp. 315, 417; The Register of Walter de Stapeldon, Bishop of Exeter (A.D. 1307-1326), ed.by F.C. Hingeston-Randolph, (London, 1892), pp. 211, 265).
