Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/346/E1377
Date
[? 1305]
Description
Petitioners
Richard de la Chaumbre (Chamber), sergeant-at-arms.
Name(s)
Chaumbre (Chamber), Richard
Addressees
King and council.
Places mentioned
Rions, [Guyenne, France]
Lochmaben [Dumfriesshire, Scotland]
Edinburgh, [Midlothian, Scotland]
Linlithgow, [West Lothian, Scotland].
Nature of request
Chaumbre requests that the king will have regard for his losses and damages at Rions where he lost horses, arms and harnesses, and whatever else he had, and was taken and imprisoned and suffered great pain in prison for four and a half years, and when he was delivered he served the king in his Scottish war in the garrisons of Lochmaben, Edinburgh and in the peel of Linlithgow where he suffered great damage of his body and other grievous losses, and will ordain a reward.
Nature of endorsement
Nothing certain is specified. They should specify something certain in his petition so that he is able to speak with the king upon something certain.
Note
The petition is dated to? 1305 on the basis of the guard note which links this to the endorsements on the preceding two petitions (SC 8/346/E1375-6). The endorsement on the preceding petition (SC 8/346/E1376) is identical, so that it seems likely that they are contemporary. However, the endorsement on SC 8/346/E1375 is not identical, though in a similar vein, but the hands are different. The dating of? 1305 is on the basis of SC 8/346/E1375, so must be considered carefully. The reference in this present petition to service in Rions where the petitioner was captured must refer to the war with France from 1294-1298, and although the petitioner says that he was imprisoned for four and a half years, we cannot know when he was captured during the war. His reference to service in the Scottish war following his delivery from captivity would seem to suggest that a dating of? 1305 is not improbable.
