[c. 1300]
Description
Petitioners
Gilbert de St Leofard, bishop of Chichester.
Name(s)
de St Leofard, Gilbert
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
bishop of Chichester
Nature of request
The bishop states that he has petitioned to the parliament at Westminster a great time past that those who have entered into the prebends of Hastings that are parochial churches with cure of souls without being presented to the bishop by colour of a grant by the king, namely Logor, Loundres, Amundesham, Blye and Nicole be presented to him as prebendaries were previously to him and his predecessors since the barony and castle of Hastings escheated to the king by escheat of Normans. The bishop has made requests to many parliaments and an inquisition has been taken and returned into Chancery, and the rolls searched, but he has been frequently adjourned, and now it is the parliament that he was last adjourned to, and he requests that the king and council will deliver reason and right according to the inquisition taken, the record of the rolls of Chancery, and according to the evidences that the bishop will wish to show.
Nature of endorsement
The sheriff of Sussex is to be written to that he should give warning to the chapter and prebendaries of the chapel of Hastings to come to a certain place before the feast of Easter, and that he diligently [...] examine all manner of things concerning the right of the liberty of the king and the chapel and all evidence concerning the business and certify the council [...] at York in the morrow of the Ascension. And the same day is to be given to the bishop of Chichester [...] the council of the king to show for himself etc. And this evidence [...] and the petition are to be duplicated [...].
Places mentioned
Hastings, [Sussex]
Westminster.
People mentioned
Thomas Logor, prebendary of Hastings
Edmund de Loundres (London), prebendary of Hastings
Walter de Amundesham, prebendary of Hastings
Adam de Blye, prebendary of Hastings
Andrew de Nicole (Lincoln), prebendary of Hastings
Sheriff of Sussex.
Note
The petition is dated to c. 1300 as a notice of adjournment to the next parliament appears in the roll for the parliament held at London in 28 Edw. I, being the October parliament of that year. The petition has to be about this time as reference is made to a Lent parliament at Westminster that seems most likely to be that of 1298. The petition can be no later than 1305 when the bishop died.
