Date
[? c. 1462]
Description
Petitioners
Mayor and commonalty of Launceston.
Addressees
[Not specified].
Nature of request
[The petition is damaged, and missing a portion from its entire right-hand side, and from much of the bottom, so that the full sense of the complaints is not clear].The mayor and commonalty state that the king ratified and confirmed their liberties by his letters patent, and [? request] a further ratification and confirmation. They also make complaints against the sheriffs and the breaking of their liberty [? possibly a reference to the breaking of the seal of their liberty].
Nature of endorsement
[None].
Places mentioned
Douneheved (Launceston), Cornwall
Lostwithiel, [Cornwall].
Note
The petition is dated to? c. 1462 on the basis of an inspeximus and confirmation granted to the burgesses of Launceston on 7 September 1462 (CPR 1461-7, p. 244). The contents of the petition seem to indicate that the inspeximus was not in response to this petition, so that it seems likely that it is a little later.
