Reference
SC 8/345/E1339
Date
[? 1461-? 1470]
Description
Petitioners
William Nycolas (Nicholas).
Name(s)
Nycolas (Nicholas), William
Addressees
[? King].
Nature of request
Nycolas complains that he was peacefully seised of a work or dole in the tinwork called 'the Colde Work' until Cowlyng came with force and arms against the king's peace on Thursday next after the feast of St Barnabus and made an assault upon him and carried away his black tin, and daily menace him to force him to quit his work against the law, liberties and customs of the Stannary. He requests that the premises be considered and that Cowlyng might be sent for to answer for the premises.
Nature of endorsement
[None].
People mentioned
John Cowlyng.
Note
The petition is dated to? 1461-? 1470 because it is unclear as to whom the petition is addressed, though the hand suggests Edward IV's reign. As a consequence it seems very probable that, as this is likely to be a Cornish petition from the reference to tin mining and the Stannary, and that no mention is made of Edward IV's son Edward, who as duke of Cornwall certainly had petitions addressed to him as prince of Wales from 1471-1483, that this petition is actually addressed to Edward IV before the creation of his son as Prince of Wales and duke of Cornwall.
