Reference
SC 8/345/E1326
Date
[1471-1483]
Description
Petitioners
Thomas Oliver, abbot of the monastery and church of Our Lady of Buckland; Convent of the monastery and church of Our Lady of Buckland,
Name(s)
Oliver, Thomas
Addressees
King.
Places mentioned
Buckland, Devon
Dartmoor Forest, [Devon].
Nature of request
The abbot and convent complain that the predecessors of the abbot have been seised of a piece of ground and waste between the abbey and the Forest of Dartmoor adjoining, the forest being parcel of the Duchy of Cornwall as appears by old bounds that have delimited since the time of the foundation of the abbey. The abbot and three of his predecessors have been maliciously kept out of the same by the might and will of the officers of the moor who claim it as part of the Duchy of Cornwall. The petitioners have petitioned to the prince and his council for remedy without satisfaction and now request that the king will command the chancellor and council of the prince to examine the premises without delay, and take such direction so that the petitioners may be restored to their ground according to the bounds, and as right and conscience require.
Nature of endorsement
[None].
Note
The petition is likely to date from 1471-1483 as it refers to earlier requests to the prince's council, and this would seem to be to that of Edward Plantagenet, eldest son of Edward IV, and he held the duchy of Cornwall from 1471 until his accession in 1483 (For the dating of the abbot, see Rowe, Contribution to a History of Cistercian Houses of Devon, (1878) p.14).
