Nature of request
The tenants complain that the prior and his brothers have wounded them so they dare not go about their business, they should be enclosed, but issue from a gate in their precinct, they neglect their parsonage, have taken their agriculture in hand and excluded the secular farmers, they common so many cattle on the common that it is bare, and the townspeople cannot common their cattle their, they carry weapons and make assaults upon the tenants going about their husbandry, they receive suspect people and women of ill repute, and they sue the townspeople at Westminster if they dare to make complaint to their utter ruin. They request that letters of the privy seal are directed to the prior to appear personally before the king and council to answer such articles and causes that the tenants shall allege against him and others of his house, and to receive such direction as seems expedient so that the friars live according to their religion, and the tenants can live in peace without any vexation of trouble of the prior or any one for him or in his name.
