Reference
SC 8/345/E1317
Date
[? 1403]
Description
Petitioners
Prior and convent of the Charterhouse of Beauvale in Nottinghamshire.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
[The petition is on paper and has been heavily amended, and it seems likely that the document might possibly be a draft with much text struck-through].The prior and convent request that they are granted a licence to receive the gift and grant of the alien priory of Bonby made to them by the prior and convent of the London Charterhouse to hold to them and their successors in free alms by ratification and confirmation by letters patent, paying nothing for the same at the Exchequer, and notwithstanding the statute of Mortmain and other statutes, and without great fines for the seal. The prior and convent of St Fromond had granted the same alien priory to the prior and convent of the Charterhouse near London, and they in turn had granted the same to the petitioners without licence.
Nature of endorsement
Bill of Bondeby.
Places mentioned
Beauvale, Nottinghamshire
Charterhouse, London
St Fromond, Normandy, [France]
Bonby, Lincolnshire.
People mentioned
Prior and convent of Charterhouse near London
Prior and convent of St Fromond.
Note
The petition is dated to? 1403 because other petitions from the same petitioners on the same matter date to this time, and also because Henry IV granted the alien priory and the rectory and parish of Bonby to the petitioners on 4 April 1403 (SC 8/229/11416; C 81/1399, no. 34; CPR 1401-5, pp. 217, 270). It is not entirely clear that the grants made in 1403 were made in response to this petition or one of the others.
