Nature of request
Baker shows that Payn and Joly wrongfully hold a certain livelihood in Worcestershire by subtle means from Baker to which they have no right to only that their fathers were enfeoffed in the same by Wryrth, who ordained his livelihood to his heirs of his body lawfully begotten, and Joly married the heir of Hugh Wryrth, but she died without issue, and Wryrth desired the livelihood to the next of his blood, namely the petitioner, but he is unable to prove his right because the moveable goods and evidences of Wryrth were entrusted to Maurice Sherman, father of John Payn. Note
The petition is dated to 1471-1483 on the basis that a cover note preceding this file of petitions indicates that the petitions SC 8/344/E1262-E1316B mostly date to the period 1481-1483, and nearly all appear to belong to the period 1471-1483, this latter date being the dates that Edward Plantagenet, Edward IV's eldest son, held the principality of Wales and the county of Chester. Throughout this file, the latter date range has been adopted where no evidence survives to indicate more specific dates.
