SC 8/344/E1309
Date
[c. 1474]
Description
Petitioners
Anneys Wynslow (Winslow), widow of Thomas Winslow, esquire.
Name(s)
Wynslow (Winslow), Anneys
Addressees
Prince and council.
Nature of request
Wynslow states that her husband died in the king's service at the siege of Alnwick and shows that they were both seised lawfully of land and tenements in Eldersfield, Longdon and Chaceley Hole in fee tail, and afterwards Thomas Winslow granted the same to certain people in fee, who, when seised, enfeoffed Ralph and Isabel Seymour with the same in tail with remainder to Humphrey and Elizabeth Seymour, and then the right heirs of Thomas. But now Richard Croftus wrongfully holds the same by his might and strength for ten years or more, and Anneys is of insufficient power to pursue her remedy by the common law, and Croftus refuses to restore the same despite Anneys having showed her evidences. Wynslow requests that Croftus be sent before the prince's council and cause him to restore her to her right and possession in all the lands and tenements with all the arrears and profits.
Nature of endorsement
[None].
Places mentioned

Richard Croftus, knight.
Note
The petition is dated to c. 1474 because it refers to the siege of Alnwick, where the petitioner's husband died, and the sporadic Yorkist siege of Alnwick castle occurred between 1461 and 1464 when the castle was finally captured with the collapse of Lancastrian control in Northumberland, and the petition also refers to the petitioner being kept from her lands for ten years, which would place the date of the petition at around 1474.
