Reference
SC 8/344/E1291
Date
[1471-1483]
Description
Petitioners
Reynold (Reginald) Legh of Derbyshire, esquire.
Name(s)
Legh, Reynold (Reginald)
Addressees
Prince.
Nature of request
Legh shows that he was peacefully seised of certain lands and tenements in Derbyshire and Cheshire until recently when Robert his brother with 30 or so evilly disposed men with force and arms on 21 December last riotously entered his lands and tenements in Cheshire and wrongfully disseised him of them, and carried away various goods and chattels of the tenants there. Legh tried to have delivery of the goods and chattels as the course of the common law required, but his brother by might and power retained them, and would not suffer them to be delivered to the undoing of Legh. Legh requests the prince's grace and letters of the privy seal directed to Robert Legh requiring him to appear before the prince and the lords of his council at a certain day to answer the premises and to abide such directions as shall be given.
Nature of endorsement
[None].
Places mentioned
Derbyshire
Cheshire.
People mentioned
[Edward Plantagenet], prince [of Wales]
Robert Legh, brother of the petitioner.
Note
The petition is dated to 1471-1483 on the basis that a cover note preceding this file of petitions indicates that the petitions SC 8/344/E1262-E1316B mostly date to the period 1481-1483, and nearly all appear to belong to the period 1471-1483, this latter date being the dates that Edward Plantagenet, Edward IV's eldest son, held the principality of Wales and the county of Chester. Throughout this file, the latter date range has been adopted where no evidence survives to indicate more specific dates.
